There is no official track providing access to this black sand beach on
the West Coast of Auckland, but for the brave, a rope dangles down the
cliff face to help aid your descent and ascent. This is a composite
image composed of two images – one shot for the foreground and a longer
exposure seconds later to allow for the clouds to begin to streak across
the sky.

I took this photo at around 5am in winter, just as the full moon was
setting over the Tasman Sea, casting its glow on Lion Rock at Piha,
Auckland, New Zealand. As it was night time, and Lion Rock,
anthropomorphised, would be asleep, the title seemed a fitting play on
the The Tokens’ song feature in the Lion King.

Scorched Forest at Mercer Bay

I took this photo overlooking a stretch of West Auckland coastline
consisting of Piha, Whites Beach, Anawhata, Wigmore Bay, Bethells Beach,
O’Neils Beach, and Muriwai beach, in that order, from the Mercer Bay
Loop Track by a grove of trees that had been burned by a wildfire.

the Hamilton Family who arrived from Scotland to farm the nearby land in
1863.

Monochrome Circumpolar Star Trail Over Hanua Falls

This is a composite image consisting of a 10 minute exposure for the foreground and hundreds of 30 second exposures of the sky blended in photoshop to reveal the motion of the stars when facing south where all stars travel in a circle around a central point (in the Southern Hemisphere this is within the Southern Cross constellation). This kind of star trail is called a circumpolar star trail. Hanua Falls, within the Hanua Ranges in Auckland, happens conveniently to face south. I stood in freezing winter temperature waters in my gumboots for 2 and a half hours to compose this image and it was totally worth it. This location, despite being in Auckland, suffers from very little light pollution, and it was so still, all I could hear was the soothing sound of the waterfall and the occasional call of a morepork – a truly magical night.
