Ace of Hearts Oil and Water Abstract

Mirjam van Sabben — Thu, 27 Mar 2025 18:36:18 +0000

These oil and water abstracts involved a fair amount of set up and a ton
of patience. I used my macro lens to focus on the bubbles of oil
floating on water inside a glass dish suspended a certain distance above
chosen objects beneath which became reflected in the bubbles aided by
careful lighting. The dishwashing liquid I added created depth to the
oil, causing the walls of the oil bubbles to form solid lines that make
them look like rings.

Manukau Heads Sunset

This sunset photo was taken from a little known lookout point through a
disused track at the mound housing Spragg Monument, near Kaitarakihi
beach and overlooks the settlement of Huia and Little Huia to the right
and Awhitu Peninsula on the left, at the entrance to the Manukau
Harbour.

Mokoroa Falls

Mirjam van Sabben — Thu, 27 Mar 2025 10:27:55 +0000

This special place in the Waitakere Ranges hosts two waterfalls side by
side, creating a natural amphitheater. There’s a lot of history here.
The rock over which the water tumbles is thought to be volcanic, over 20
million years old. In Maori mythology, it is believed that the taniwha
Te Mokoroa lived in the pool at the base of the falls (Mokoroa means
‘long lizard,’ inspired by the mythical creature). In more recent
history, the bigger of the two, Mokoroa Falls, used to have a Kauri dam
at the top. They’d ‘trip’ the dam which would cause the ensuing flood to
wash the kauri logs downstream to be delivered to the mill. Due to
Kauri dieback the falls can no longer be accessed.
